Discover Chilches

Chilches, Xilxes in Valencian, lies in the Plana Baixa region, just 7 metres above sea level. Its municipal area combines hills to the west, orange groves to the north and south and wetlands to the east, next to the beach. The climate is pleasant and typically Mediterranean, perfect for enjoying the sea and taking long walks or bike rides through the wetland, which fills with birds in winter, or into the nearby hills, ideal for hiking.

In the old quarter, Calle de la Iglesia, Plaza de Alfonso XIII and Calle Arbelló stand out for their distinctive layout and pedestrian character. Plaza de España brings together the town hall, the Casa Abadía, the parish church and the Fuente de la Unión fountain, the heart of local life.

Chilches dates back to Roman times. Among the most important finds in the area are a milestone proving that the Via Augusta passed through here, a bronze statuette of Mercury and several Arab gold and silver coins. In 1297 it was declared a Royal Town by a royal decree issued in Zaragoza, and in 1306 the Barony of Xilxes was created.

Today its economy combines the packing and trading of fruit and vegetables with chemical, electronic components, tile and ceramics industries. Chilches is an ideal destination for enjoying the Mediterranean at a relaxed, family-friendly pace.
