San Rafael del Río lies in the Baix Maestrat region, at around 300 metres above sea level, on the border with Catalonia marked by the Sénia river. Its municipal area is almost entirely flat, and its landscape is typically Mediterranean, with olive trees, pines and farmland under a mild climate.
The village centres on the parish church of Sant Rafel and its quiet streets, while the Sénia river, flowing alongside, offers pleasant walks along its banks.
Its history as a municipality is very recent: before 1927 it did not exist as such, being part of Traiguera. That year it became independent after years of disputes over the division of the municipal area.
Today its economy is based on farming, livestock and industries making furniture and furniture accessories. San Rafael del Río is a simple, welcoming destination for discovering the northern Maestrat.

Around 16 July, San Rafael del Río celebrates its patron saint festivities in honour of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. Highlights include the Youth Terrace and the famous Water Festival, a refreshing celebration that brings locals and visitors together in the middle of summer.
